How to Fix Early Morning Wakings After Daylight Savings

Baby standing in a crib because they're waking up early after Daylight Savings

Daylight Savings can throw your baby’s sleep off by an hour—or sometimes more—leaving you with early morning wakings that feel impossible to handle. Even babies who usually sleep through the night might suddenly be up at 5am or earlier.

Why this happens:

When the clock springs forward (or back), your baby’s internal clock doesn’t immediately adjust. Their nap schedule, bedtime, and natural wake times all shift, which can create early wake-ups and overtired afternoons.

Gentle ways to reset:

  1. Shift bedtime gradually: Move bedtime by 10–15 minutes each night until you’re back on your desired schedule.Keep morning light consistent: Open the blinds at the same time each morning to signal daytime.

  2. Maintain your routine: Stick to the usual bath, feed, and bedtime cues—consistency helps babies recalibrate.

  3. Help them back to sleep if it’s before 6am: If your baby wakes very early, try soothing them back to sleep rather than starting the day too soon.

  4. Don’t rush the first feed: If your baby wakes early but isn’t truly hungry, wait a few minutes to see if they’ll settle back down.

With a few gentle adjustments, your baby, and you, can get back to a smoother morning rhythm. Daylight Savings is temporary, but consistent habits will keep your baby sleeping well all year long.
