How to Stop Early Morning Wakings (Why Your Baby Is Waking at 5am)

Dad holding baby, wondering "why is my baby waking up at 5am?"

If your baby keeps waking at 5am, the cause is usually an overtired schedule, too much daytime sleep, sleep associations, or environmental disruptions. Here’s how to identify the cause and help your baby sleep later.

If your baby is waking up at 5am every single morning, you probably know the feeling. You hear the first little sounds coming from the monitor and immediately check the time… hoping maybe it’s 6:30am.

But instead, the clock says 5:02am.

You try waiting a few minutes, hoping your baby will settle back to sleep. Maybe you even tiptoe into the room to replace the pacifier or offer a quick cuddle. But before long, it’s clear: your baby is up for the day.

Meanwhile, you’re standing there wondering how someone so tiny can function so happily before the sun is even up.

The good news is that early morning wakings are very common — and usually fixable! Most of the time, they’re a sign that something in your baby’s sleep environment, schedule, or sleep habits needs a small adjustment.

Below are five important areas to look at if your baby keeps waking too early.

Why Is My Baby Waking Up at 5am?

Generally, anything before 6am is considered an early waking for babies and toddlers. However, it’s important to look at the whole night of sleep.

For example, if a baby sleeps from 6pm to 5am, that’s actually 11 hours of sleep, which is a full night for many babies.

In situations like this, the wake-up may be happening simply because the entire schedule is shifted earlier.

This is why we want to look at the full sleep picture, not just the morning wake-up.

Step 1: Check the Sleep Environment

Early morning sleep is the lightest stage of the night, which means babies are more easily disturbed by light and noise.

A few things to check:

• Is the room dark enough? (Hint: Blackout curtains are extremely helpful!)

• Is morning sunlight creeping into the room?

• Are there early household noises waking your baby?

One helpful rule of thumb: if you can clearly see your hand in front of your face, the room may be too bright for optimal sleep.

Another favorite tip I often recommend is using a box fan for white noise. A simple fan can help drown out early morning sounds like siblings waking up, coffee makers, or dogs moving around the house.

Those small noises might not seem loud to us, but during lighter sleep stages they can easily wake a baby.

Step 2: Create a Consistent Bedtime Routine

A predictable bedtime routine helps signal to your baby’s brain that sleep is coming.

A good routine should:

• Last 15–30 minutes

• Be calm and consistent

• Happen in the same order each night

A simple routine might look like: Bath, Pajamas, Feed, Book, Bed

When this routine happens consistently, it helps regulate your baby’s internal clock, which supports more consolidated nighttime sleep.

Step 3: Is Your Baby’s Schedule Causing Early Morning Wakings?

A baby’s daytime schedule plays a huge role in early morning wakings. One concept that’s important to understand here is sleep pressure.

Sleep pressure is the natural buildup of tiredness that happens while we’re awake. The longer we stay awake during the day, the more sleep pressure builds — helping us stay asleep overnight.

If a baby’s schedule is off, that pressure can be affected.

Two common issues include:

  1. Overtiredness

If wake windows are too long or naps are skipped, babies can become overtired. This raises cortisol levels, which can lead to restless nights and early morning wakings.

  1. Too much daytime sleep

On the other hand, if a baby sleeps too much during the day, they may not build enough sleep pressure to stay asleep until morning.

Finding the right balance of age-appropriate wake windows, nap timing, and total daytime sleep is key.

By the way. This is one of the most common things I help families adjust when we work together. Small schedule changes can make a big difference in helping babies sleep later in the morning.

Step 4: How Is Your Baby Falling Asleep?

Another common cause of early wakings is how a baby falls asleep at bedtime.

If a baby falls asleep while:

• feeding

• rocking

• bouncing

• being held

-they may need that same assistance when they wake between sleep cycles.

Babies naturally wake multiple times overnight — including in the early morning hours. If they don’t already know how to fall asleep independently, they may struggle to go back to sleep at 5am.

Step 5: Rule Out Discomfort

Sometimes early waking is simply a sign that something is bothering your baby physically.

Possible causes include:

• Allergies

• Eczema or itchy skin

• Reflux

• Teething

• Hunger

If your baby seems restless or uncomfortable overnight, it may be worth exploring whether something else is affecting their sleep.

Final Thoughts

If your baby is waking at 5am every morning, it’s usually a sign that something in the sleep setup needs adjusting. Looking at the sleep environment, routine, schedule, sleep habits, and possible discomfort can often reveal what’s causing those early mornings. With the right adjustments, many babies are able to sleep later and wake up more rested.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5am too early for a baby to wake up?

For most babies and toddlers, anything before 6am is considered an early waking. However, if bedtime is very early, a baby may already be getting a full night of sleep. Also, some families need a wake up time to be 5/5:30am to fit their schedule. This blog post can still help, but just adjust the schedule times!

Why does my baby wake up happy at 5am?

If your baby wakes up happy and alert, it may mean they’ve already gotten enough sleep overnight or their schedule is shifted too early.

Will an earlier bedtime fix early morning wakings?

Sometimes. If a baby is overtired, an earlier bedtime can help improve sleep. But if bedtime is already very early, the overall schedule may need to shift later instead.
